click hereEstancia Huechahue (pronounced "way-cha-way"!) is a working cattle ranch in the Patagonia region of Argentina. 4 generations of the Wood family have worked on the 15,000 acres of Patagonian Steppe. Today Jane Wood Williams runs the estancia and has been welcoming guests since 1990. Life at Huechahue is always an adventure, often involving horses. Patagonia is beautiful, rugged, and wild. The Estancia grows much of its own vegetables and fruits as well as meat. It produces its own electricity. There are caves on the property some of which have been used by the local Mapuche Indians as burial sites, and some have primitive art on the walls.
There are three guest bungalows near the main ranch house. Each bungalow has three spacious bedrooms with a private bathroom. There’s a common area in each which is the perfect place to enjoy a book or a glass of wine with a warm fire blazing in the fireplace. Each has a nice porch from which to view a Patagonian sunrise and maybe even some wildlife. In the original ranch house is a comfortable living room where guests gather for drinks and to share the experiences of a great day in Patagonia.
Meals are served in the adjacent dining room. Huechahue's wonderful "quincho," or barbecue house, is the perfect way to get the full Argentine asado dinner experience. Argentina has a rich culinary heritage that stems from Italian and Spanish cuisine but has strong French influences. Some of the traditional Argentine food you will experience from the kitchen is beef and lamb off the grill, handmade stuffed pasta, pizza, gnocchi, milanesa, empanadas, and desserts featuring dulce du leche.
Huechahue is located near several of northern Patagonia's best rivers. There is frontage on the Rio Collon Cura, known for producing incredible numbers of brown and rainbow trout. Anglers float through the semi-arid countryside working the riffles and pools of this scenic river. The lower Rio Alumine-which turns into the Rio Collon Cura-is a short 90 minute drive away and can be accessed and floated. The upper section of the Rio Chimehuin, if floated, gives anglers the experience of fishing the river that was the impetus to Argentine fly fishing. Also, the lower Rio Malleo is for anglers who want to fish one of Argentina's most prolific insect hatching rivers thereby testing their flies for rising trout. There is fly fishing-only and all is catch and release.
From the U.S. an overnight international flight will take you to Buenos Aires. From there Aerolineas Argentinas runs daily flights from Buenos Aires to Chapelco airport (Code is CPC) at San Martin de los Andes. The 40 min. transfer from Chapelco to Huechahue is included in the daily rate.
